The first time that I went to Santorini, I used an airplane and the first impression that I had was not the best possible. Especially when the car was running on the road next to the airport I thought that I had landed by mistake not in a greek island but somewhere in the wild west
.

Nevertheless, when I walked the small path from the square of Fira to the Caldera, I was suprised by the view. It was really magnificent! There is a greek song about Santorini and its Caldera, which talks about a miracle that happens there! That is what I felt. A miracle right in front of my eyes.

Santorini

Really beautiful white villages, with marvellous architecture, laying at the Caldera’s edge, hundreds of meters over the sea. How enormous that explosion could be to send the biggest part of ancient Strongili to the depth of the Aegean Sea?

That first time I had gone to Santorini for work. Since then I visited the island two more times for vacations. And I will go there many more times…

Santorini is not just a well-known cosmopolitan travel destination. It’s more than this. It’s a feast of light, reflecting to its white jouses and the deep blue sea of the Aegean.

Santorini is a geological treausure. You can see it’s geological history in front of your eyes, all over around, in the ground of Thira (this is the formal name of Santorini). And it is also an archaeological treasure, with many monuments in Ancient Thira and in Akrotiri, two of the main places where Ancient Cycladic Civilization was risen.

But here is what I liked most…
I liked walking at Fira by night and having breakfast at the cafeterias with view to the Caldera. I liked the peace that you can find at Firostefani and Imerovigli, even the days that the hotels are full of crowd. I enjoyed the Sunset in Ia, but I preffered not to look to the sun but to the villages watching them changing thousands of colours just in few minutes. I also enjoyed eating fresh fish in Ammoudi, next to the sea, smelling the aura of the waves.
I liked the easy nights in Kamari with live music next to the pool, the sunrising in the village’s beach and the fresh pies from Mindrinos bakery. I liked the beach-bars in Perissa and Perivolos and their really fun parties. What I didn’t like was the expensive hotels and restaurants that offer bad value for the prices they charge. You can find cheap and good hotels in Santorini, but you have to search a lot in the internet. You can also find high class hotels, but you must be sure that you will get what you have ordered for. And the only way to do this id to have personal contact with the hotel’s reservations department (even with an email after booking). And as for your dinners, you can find many good restaurants. Just remember that expensive is not always the best. You may find cheap restaurants with poor decoration or view, but with perfect local dishes
.

Why should you wait for? Book the hotel that you prefer and your plane tickets and be prepared for magic vacations to Santorini. I think that I will do the same. Again!

Vangelis.
